How to use CLARe

CLARe contains learning objects and pedagogic assets. When you search, you can choose to look for either or both. You can also browse learning objects or assets.

Click these icons:

to preview a learning object

to download a learning object and save it to your computer

to save a video to your computer

to save an audio file to your computer

to save a text file to your computer

Downloading learning objects

  • Search or browse for a learning object by key word(s).
  • Click on the title of the learning object to see information (metadata) describing the key features of that learning object, such as the kind of activities it practises, the level it is aimed at or the length the activity might take to complete. The icons on the top right of the box allow you to preview (or download) the learning object – see below.
  • Click on the preview icon to look at the learning object and try some of the activities. Warning! Videos and some Flash-software activities will not work in this preview mode. They will work fine if downloaded to your computer.
  • If you want to use the learning object, you need to download it to your computer. To do this, click on the ‘package’ file . Save the ‘package’ in a folder of your choice. It will save as a zip file. This file will then need to be fully extracted in order to be used properly. To extract a zip file, right click on the file and choose 'extract'. The .zip file contains a number of information files. Click on ‘index.html’ or the html page showing the name of the LO, to start the learning object. MAKE SURE that you open the file in Internet Explorer (rather than another browser such as Netscape or Firefox).

Downloading assets

  • There are different types of pedagogical assets: video , audio and text .
  • Search or browse for a pedagogic asset by key word(s).
  • Click on the title of the asset to see information (metadata) about that asset, for example, whether it is an audio or video, what kind of topic it deals with or how long its duration is. The icon on the top right of the box will only allow you to download it.
  • Click on the associated icon to save the asset directly to your computer.
